Angkor Wat, Cambodia
On day three, having arrived in Siem Reap the previous evening, we set off at the eye wateringly early time of 4:30am to catch sunrise at the incredible Angkor Wat, something which has been a lifelong bucket list goal for me. Sitting at the banks of the pond, you could just make out the silhouette of the magnificent temple, and as sunrise crept closer, each tiny detail became ever more clear. Countless pictures later, we toured the site with a guide and even climbed some precarious stairs to reach the top, taking in views of the other temples and surrounding jungle.
Next, we headed to the temple where Lara Croft was filmed - Ta Prohm - which featured numerous trees and roots, some of which held up the temple itself. The temples were also adorned in a number of intricate carvings, all of which had a story, usually something along the lines of ‘this man is strong and brave, as he wants beautiful wife’, or ‘his wife is crying because he drinks too much’.
The third temple we visited – Bayon - was possibly the most interesting, renowned for the number of carved heads and faces into rocks, all on different levels.
Anyway, in this instance I feel pictures speak louder than words. It really was a magical place, and one I feel very lucky to have visited.
